Pebble Tec vs. Quartz vs. Standard Plaster: Which Pool Finish Is Right for You?

Pebble Tec, quartz, and standard plaster compared by cost, lifespan, feel, water color, and Los Angeles pool conditions.

Standard plaster usually costs $5-$7 per square foot and lasts 8-12 years, quartz costs $7-$10 and lasts 10-15 years, and Pebble Tec pool resurfacing usually costs $10-$14 and can last 15-20 years with good water chemistry.

That is the short version. The right finish depends on budget, how the pool is used, how the surface should feel underfoot, and how much color variation you want in the water. LA water is mineral-heavy in many neighborhoods, so surface choice and startup chemistry matter more than people expect.

Pebble Tec — which is a brand name, not just a texture — is durable and good-looking, but it is not automatically the best choice for every pool. Some families prefer quartz because it is smoother. Some older pools should stay with standard plaster because the remodel budget is better spent on tile, coping, or equipment.

Finish Cost and Lifespan Comparison

Finish Cost/sqft Lifespan Best for
Standard white plaster $5-$7 8-12 years Lower-cost replaster, classic light water, rental properties
Quartz aggregate $7-$10 10-15 years Better durability with a smoother feel than pebble
Pebble Tec or pebble aggregate $10-$14 15-20 years Heavy-use pools, darker water colors, long-term durability
Glass bead or premium aggregate $14-$18+ 15-20 years High-end visual effect, estate pools, dramatic water color

These numbers assume normal prep. If the existing surface is hollow, delaminated, stained through, or cracked, prep can change the budget. Tile repair, coping repair, light niche replacement, and drain cover updates can also add cost.

Standard Plaster

Standard plaster is the classic pool finish: white cement, marble dust, and water. It gives a clean light-blue water color and feels smooth when new. It is also the lowest-cost option for most pool resurfacing jobs.

The tradeoff is lifespan. In Los Angeles, standard plaster can show staining, etching, or roughness sooner if water chemistry is neglected. Many pools need replastering around year 8-12. Good brushing and balanced water during the first 30 days help, but plaster still wears faster than aggregate.

Choose plaster when the goal is a clean refresh, the pool is not heavily used, or the budget also needs to cover tile, coping, lighting, or equipment repairs. Do not choose it just because it is cheapest if the pool gets daily use all summer.

Quartz Finish

Quartz is a blend of plaster and colored quartz aggregate. It costs more than standard plaster because the material is tougher and the application takes more care. It also gives more color options without the rougher feel of pebble.

For many LA homeowners, quartz is the middle ground. It resists staining better than standard plaster, feels comfortable underfoot, and lasts longer when chemistry is maintained. It is a good choice for family pools in Sherman Oaks, Pasadena, Thousand Oaks, and similar neighborhoods where the pool gets steady use but the client does not want a textured pebble feel.

Quartz is not indestructible. Poor startup, high calcium, low pH, or neglected brushing can still damage the surface. The difference is that quartz gives you more margin.

Pebble Tec and Pebble Aggregate

Pebble finishes use exposed aggregate to create a more durable surface. Pebble Tec is the name people know, but there are several pebble systems and blends. The visual range is wide: sandy lagoon, deep blue, dark gray, green-blue, or natural stone looks.

The main benefit is durability. Pebble handles heavy use and chemical variation better than standard plaster. It is common on pools where the owner wants a 15-20 year finish and accepts more texture underfoot.

The main drawback is feel. Some people love the grip. Others find it too rough, especially on steps and benches. If kids sit on the Baja shelf all day, texture matters. Ask to see and touch samples wet, not just dry boards in an office.

How LA Water Changes the Decision

Los Angeles water can be hard. High calcium and evaporation leave scale, especially on darker finishes and waterline tile. A finish that looks perfect in a showroom can behave differently in a hot Valley yard where the pool gets sun all afternoon.

Darker finishes also make chemistry discipline more visible. They can show scale, mottling, and dust faster. That does not mean avoid them. It means understand the maintenance.

For mineral-heavy water, quartz and pebble usually tolerate wear better than standard plaster. Still, startup is not optional. Fresh finish needs brushing, controlled pH, and close chemistry for the first month (sometimes longer if the fill water is difficult).

When Resurfacing Should Include More Than Finish

If the pool is drained, inspect everything you normally cannot see. Fittings, lights, main drains, tile, coping joints, step edges, and skimmer throats should be checked before the new finish goes on.

This is where resurfacing often turns into a modest remodel. Waterline tile replacement, coping repair, LED light upgrades, or a variable-speed pump can be smart while the pool is already down. It costs more now, but it can avoid draining again six months later.

The right finish is the one that matches use, budget, and maintenance habits. Standard plaster is clean and economical. Quartz is the balanced choice. Pebble is the long-life option when texture is acceptable. Start there, then let the pool condition decide the rest.
